A record number of participants, over 200 people, from 18 different nationalities will compete in the Wife Carrying World Championships held next weekend in Sonkajärvi.
For the first time, a women’s category has been introduced, with five pairs already registered and room for three more. Registration for Friday’s sprint competition and Saturday’s team competition is open until Wednesday evening. However, the main event is already fully booked.
The opening speech for the Wife Carrying World Championships will be given on Saturday, July 5, by combined Nordic skier and World Championship medalist Ilkka Herola. In addition, attendees may spot members of the Puijo Volley women’s team with their championship trophy. Finland’s strongest man, Severi Allonen, will also be competing.
“Preparations have gone according to plan so far, with the final push being the construction of the course. Interest in the event has been strong, so we hope the audience will come out to enjoy the unique atmosphere of wife carrying and have fun with great music in the evenings,” says Joni Juntunen, Chairman of the Board of Eukonkanto Oy.
The evening festivities of the Wife Carrying Championships will feature performances on Friday by Komiat, Ilja Teppo Trio, and Rutakko All Stars, and on Saturday by Stig, CatCat, and Illansuu.
Juntunen reminds attendees that security checks will be conducted at the entrance and that umbrellas are not allowed on the premises. Umbrellas are prohibited for safety reasons and to avoid obstructing the view for other spectators.
The competition will be streamed live online, with viewing access available for purchase through the Wife Carrying online store.
“Last year, there were fraudulent links circulating, so it’s important to remember that the correct link is available at the Wife Carrying online store. Viewing requires registration, so it’s a good idea to buy your ticket in advance to ensure you can watch the event. All races will be streamed, and access costs five euros,” Juntunen explains.
