The Wife Carrying World Championships, held in Sonkajärvi on the first weekend of July, have received a record number of registrations for this time of year. So far, over 50 pairs have registered for the main series. A total of 75 pairs can be accepted into the main series.
“The demand has pleasantly surprised the organizers. Never before has the list of registrants filled up this early,” says Joni Juntunen, Chairman of the Board of Eukonkanto Oy.
International competitors from 14 different countries have already registered. So far, only one pair has registered for the women’s pairs series, which means that the women’s series may have to be canceled if more pairs do not register.
Commentary Legend Kaj Kunnas to Commentate Wife Carrying
Sports journalist Kaj Kunnas will commentate the wife carrying sprint competition, main series, and team competition on Friday, July 4th, and Saturday, July 5th. The competitions will be broadcast live online, and viewing rights will be available for purchase in the Wife Carrying online store starting early summer.
“The preparations for the event are well underway, and we can already promise that it will be another top-notch summer event,” says Joni Juntunen.
Performers confirmed for the event include Ilja Teppo, Komiat, and Rutakko Allstars on Friday evening, and Cat Cat and Stig on Saturday evening.
