Half of the spots in the main event of the Wife-Carrying World Championships, held in Sonkajärvi on the first weekend of July, have already been filled by registrants. The main competition, taking place on Saturday, July 5, 2025, has room for 70 pairs.

However, the women’s category, offered for the first time this year, has yet to see much interest.

“So far, not a single women’s pair has registered, so now is the perfect opportunity for all women interested in wife-carrying to step up and show what they’ve got. Without female competitors, we obviously can’t hold the women’s category,” says Joni Juntunen, Chairman of the Board of Eukonkanto Oy.

Overall, the event preparations are enjoying favorable winds, with market stall sales, for example, proceeding smoothly. The lineup of performers has been confirmed: Ilja Teppo, Komiat, and Rutakko Allstars will take the stage on Friday evening, while illansuu, Cat Cat, and Stig are set to perform on Saturday.

“Registration for the competitions has gotten off to a really great start, and we currently have participants coming from over 10 different countries. We hope to surpass last year’s record of 21 different nationalities this year. And we also hope that the women’s category will attract some competitors, because the first champions will always be remembered,” Joni Juntunen adds.
