The 28th Wife Carrying World Championship will take place in Sonkajärvi on July 4–5, 2025, and for the first time, the competition will include a dedicated series for women. The women’s series will follow the same rules as the main competition.
The recently renovated sports field in Sonkajärvi now allows for a larger number of participants than before. Next year, the main event will accommodate 75 pairs, compared to the previous limit of 50.
Registration for the Wife Carrying World Championship and ticket sales will open on December 20, 2024. Tickets can now also be purchased using Epassi as a payment method.
“Now is the time to grab your tickets and sign up! Advance tickets are on sale and make for a great Christmas gift, even for friends,” says Joni Juntunen, Chairman of the Board of Eukonkanto Oy.
Fresh Faces in Eukonkanto Oy’s Board
Eukonkanto Oy, the organizer of the competition, recently appointed a new board. In addition to Chairman Juntunen, the board members are Kari Väisänen, Anni Kainulainen, Venla Luukkonen, Johanna Mähönen, and Otto Hyrkäs as a substitute member. The board now represents a balanced mix of local expertise and perspectives from different age groups in Sonkajärvi. Eukonkanto Oy aims to honor long-standing traditions while introducing fresh ideas and renewing the event with a positive spirit.
“Last summer, the event was hugely popular, with a record number of international pairs participating. Over the years, we’ve received many requests for a women’s series, and this will now become a reality in the upcoming championship. Hopefully, we can achieve a new record for participant numbers next summer,” Juntunen hopes.
Musical Performances Lined Up
The first artists for next summer have already been booked. On Friday, the performers include Komiat and Ilja Teppo & Trio, while Saturday will feature CatCat and Illansuu. Additional performers will be announced in the spring, with three acts scheduled for both evenings.
